Overview & Responsibilities

The lead engineer plays an integral part in delivering Fanatical Support to Enterprise level customers. Rackspace hosts large scale, mission critical environments and you will be expected to demonstrate a high degree of technical leadership in order to deliver world class technical service for a wide variety of technologies and applications.

In this pivotal, autonomous and varied role, you will have the opportunity to utilise cutting edge technologies across a broad range of OpenStack powered Cloud, Dedicated and Hybrid platforms. You will manage complex problems as well as be a proactive and consultative resource to help customers plan for their future growth and the continual adoption of emerging technologies and best practices.

Partnered with a Service Delivery Manager, you will act as a senior escalation point, orchestrating technical teams and resources to provide seamless support for your customer’s online strategy. You will be responsible for achieving security, scalability and performance through deep knowledge of automation, scaling, application life-cycle management, Continuous Deployment and Integration.

Whilst the technical demands of the role may be varied, Rackspace will provide you excellent onsite training facilities and resources for the on-boarding and your continued development to ensure that you can exceed the expectation of our customers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Experience of hosting web applications across a variety of Microsoft products

  • A good understanding of Microsoft technologies. Windows Server, Active Directory, IIS, SQL

  • Experience of architecting and managing production environments across Physical, Virtualised and Cloud technologies

  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting high availability solutions, Microsoft Windows and SQL Clustering, loadbalanced Web Farms etc.

  • A solid understanding of Enterprise class Networking, Virtualisation and Storage technologies

  • Industry qualifications such as MCSE highly desirable.

  • Experience of Windows and SQL Clustering

  • Understanding of Linux Kernel. RedHat, Centos, Debian or Ubuntu

  • Experience of hosting web applications across a wide variety of Webserver and Database technologies. Apache, NGINX, Hadoop, Casandra, MongoDB, Oracle or MySQL

  • Scripting skills in Python, PowerShell or other versatile scripting language is desirable

  • DevOps methodologies; demonstrable ability to write and troubleshoot code in one or more of the following languages, Java, Python, Ruby, Perl, PHP


  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with great attention to detail

  • Tenacious problem solver, will own issues until full resolution

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritise work in order to maintain required productivity levels

  • Willingness to research and self-study to keep technical skills relevant.

  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player.

  • Strong rapport and relationship building skills with both internal departments and external customers

  • A good level of business awareness and commercial acumen

  • Due to 24x7x365 operation, must be willing to be available for occasional out of hours work

  • Understanding of IT industry working practices. ITIL foundation certification desirable
