Job Description:

The role of Director, Supplier Management, will report to the Assistant Vice-President Shared Services & Life Claims and is a key member of the Group Life & Disability Shared Services Leadership Team. The Director is accountable for establishing and monitoring Supplier relationships in Group Benefits Life and Disability. This includes development and execution of the overall Supplier Strategy, in line with the Group Life and Disability Strategy, provider negotiations, governance, service billing, relationship management and ongoing quality and monitoring of the effectiveness of our providers. The Director must develop strong internal and external working relationships, ensure the profitability of the relationships and continue to foster and monitor the health of the long-term working relationships at the highest levels.

This role is also accountable for strategy, leadership and management of the national network of Medical Consultants leveraged within Group Life and Disability.

Main Accountabilities:


  • Researches the market to determine innovative and emerging supplier/partner trends within disability prevention and management, as well as establishes strong working relationships with the provider community

  • Partners with Product Marketing to bring new and innovative suppliers to market and create a vision that will operationalize product for Group Life & Disability

  • Collaborates with Enterprise Services – Strategic Sourcing to develop an annual strategy to support governance and cost savings

  • Establishes practices and guidelines for the selection of external providers that reflect Sun Life’s disability management philosophy and principles

  • Oversees change management and communication to ensure messages are well positioned and timely for end users of these services

  • Develops a strategy for Medical consultants and suppliers that supports Group life and Disability direction and Client for Life strategy and supports the Medical Consultant team to align to this strategy

Relationship Management

  • Maintains effective working relationships with internal stakeholders, including executive sponsors and operational leaders, ensuring the supplier relationships continue to deliver value to the business

  • Maintains consistent communications with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Manages internal and external expectations regarding our current capabilities (what we can and cannot do) and provides support to Business Development in the preparation of client Request For Proposals

  • Engages internal and external customer/provider feedback to assist in developing more effective working relationships and take action on feedback

  • Partners with Sun Life’s Chief Medical Director to meet or exceed medical operating guidelines

  • Ensures the annual provider relationship management compliance reporting is completed

    Agreement Management

  • Provides the AVP of Shared Services the vision and business requirements for all new products or providers being implemented.

  • Provides VP of Group Life and Disability and AVP of Shared Services direction in contract negotiation process and risk mitigation

  • Ensure internal partners (Legal, Compliance, Finance, Privacy, IT Security, Taxation, Sourcing etc.) are engaged to create comprehensive contract documentation and service agreements for providers

  • Partners with Chief Medical Director on strategy for Medical Consultants program enhancements

Outcome Management

  • Create cost containment strategies that will capture cost reductions for suppliers/providers

  • Ensures quality-monitoring system is in place internally to track performance to contractual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for providers and medical consultants

  • Ensures Supplier Quality Assurance Programs are in place and reported on the agreed upon schedule

  • Ensures unique / special customer requests / requirements are met

  • Develops budget forecasts, performance and trending reports, identify issues, strategies and opportunities for cost containment and take appropriate action


  • Provide leadership to the Supplier Managers, Medical Consultants and Team of Coordinators in the overall delivery of supplier management

  • Establish credibility and trusted partnerships with end users of supplier services, delivering on the GL&D Shared Services Purpose and Vision


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Proven influencing and negotiation skills

  • Excellent organizational skills/time management and ability to work under pressure

  • Strong analytical, research and problem solving skills

  • High level of competency in understanding of financial impacts, expenses and cost containment

  • Proven change management skills and the ability to lead through change

  • Ability to analyze, synthesize and translate stakeholder requirements and strategic objectives into relevant tactical plans and solutions

  • Proven experience in Supplier Management and procurement principles

  • University degree in related field or equivalent

  • Business management experience

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office suite of products (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)


  • Experience in Group Life and Disability

  • Experience with operational excellence and continuous improvement that defines and delivers national processes and/or best practices would be an asset

  • Project Management skills

  • Bilingual (French / English)

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
