About the Role
Within this role, you will ensure that the spectrum of issues that SO faces are identified and understood, and appropriate strategies and plans are developed to best represent National Grid’s interests, in line with the System Operator (SO) ambition and broader National Grid strategy. You will also develop the SO Strategy and long term plan that supports major SO initiatives, including the ESO Forward Plan and RIIO2 submissions that will maximise the opportunity for the SO to facilitate the decarbonisation of the energy system and ensure security of supply in the most affordable manner.
Shape the strategic direction and develop and prioritise the organisational, operational and financial focus areas and strategic objectives for SO in order to maximise the delivery of short and long-term shareholder value and the safeguarding of National Grid’s commercial and reputational interests.
Evaluate energy insights delivered through forecasts and scenario modelling and incorporate them into a compelling long-term view of how and where National Grid participate and influence in a changing energy landscape.
Monitor and evaluate the changing political and regulatory landscape in order to qualify the impact on SO and ensure the business is ready for major regulatory/policy changes.
Conduct regular market and horizon scanning exercises globally, and gather views and information across National Grid, to keep informed of any developments which may impact the future direction of SO, to ensure that the SO ambition is still fit-for-purpose, and to reflect changes in the internal and external environment.
Lead a highly motivated, innovative and focused team, developing a talent and performance management culture that drives value through employee engagement and successfully meets or exceeds the strategic objectives of the SO ambition.
What You'll Get
A competitive salary determined between £50,000 - £60,000 – dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 15% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. A degree level qualification or equivalent relevant experience is essential, plus significant experience of the energy industry or a similarly heavily regulated industry. An MBA or equivalent is desirable. You will also have:
Experience of developing strategy for a business and formulating strategic initiatives and policy positions
Ability to apply strategic frameworks and concepts to solve business issues
Experience of communicating and influencing internal and external executive level stakeholders, with the ability to think in a structured way and lead business performance initiatives
Ability to apply an understanding the operational and commercial challenges facing the business to support critical decision making
Understand the energy sector in terms of structure, regulatory environment and the short- and long-term issues affecting the industry
Understands how to value risk and experience of developing processes which support business risk/reward decision making
Experience of delivering business insights through a variety of modelling and analytical techniques
